Excellent rice cooker, 18 Dec 2007

An excellent addition to the Kitchen if you like your rice. Easy to use and clean. The steam option is O.K. too, not that it’s used that often. A recommendation should you purchase, follow supplied cooking instructions. However, once cooked, the longer you leave on the “stay warm” setting the better the texture of the rice (Firmer). Otherwise it can be a little soggy straight after it’s initial cooking phase. You will not be disappointed.

    Water, water everywhere…, 16 April 2010

I bought this product to replace a Kenwood machine that lasted 10 years before it gave up the ghost. I must have used the Kenwood at least twice a week over this time with perfect rice every time – so the least I could expect from a product that cost over twice as much is make rice to an equal standard.

Unfortunately, this Cuisinart Rice Cooker just isn’t fit for purpose. Every time I have used it, water has spilled out the top and all over my kitchen. If I use it now, I have to keep an eye on the machine and keep lifting the lid to prevent the water coming out. Not only that, the rice it makes is always too wet and soggy. I have tried using different brands of rice, pre-washing it more / less, adding a bit less / bit more water but to no avail.

The final straw is the supposedly stainless steel outer. I have many stainless steel appliances in my kitchen that still look good after years of use, but this became tarnished and rusty within months. I guess this due to cheap / poor quality metal being used.

I have never used the steamer attachment to steam food, so can’t comment on that.

Don’t follow the marker in the bowl…, 7 Sep 2010

I considered many rice cookers around this price range and read the reviews. I decided to buy the Cuisinart because of its 5 year guarantee.

This is a beautiful machine, very stylish and very unobtrusive on the kitchen counter. The rice is cooked beautifully, and I couldn’t get enough of it! I did have some problems with it boiling over to start with though.

The only drawback I found is that the steamer tray has a deep groove running round the inside edge which is difficult to clean properly, also, the “lip” of the lid is quite deep (I assume to catch condensation) but it is also difficult to clean without a brush or pipe cleaner.

EDIT: Finally, after a week of trials and some internet research I have found out that the markers are inaccurate and lead to over boiling because there is too much water in the bowl. Use the cup that you use to measure the rice with to measure the water, inline with the amount of water recommended in the instructions, and all should be fine.

EDIT: Even more finally, I found that if you add a teaspoon of oil to the rice before you add the water, it won’t even come close to boiling over. Hope that helps some of you guys out.
